The international renown of the Louvre museum sometimes makes us forget that it was originally designed as a palace. Since the Middle Ages, its development has been quite exceptional, marked by both the major events of French history and the succession of architects and decorators who have left their mark on it. An easy day trip from the chateau, but be prepared to fall in love and return again and again

André Le Nôtre who designed the gardens of Chateau de Villette, also deisgned another noteworhty lanndscape at Versailles! André Le Nôtre(1613-1700) was an expert not only in botany but also in architecture and painting, as well being an art collector. He had already worked for the king on many other sites. Versailles, however, with its narrow hillock and marsh land, was a particularly unpromising one. Yet as construction of the chateau proceeded apace, Le Nôtre managed to perfect the model of formal -or French-style- gardens. The Sun King, who both commissioned and inspired the design of the gardens, himself wrote a guide on how to show the grounds to visitors, titled The Way to Present the Gardens of Versailles. Look in the library and let us know if you find one for the gardens at de Villette.
